Normatec use reduces swelling and inflammation which in turn speeds up muscle recovery. It prevents delayed-onset muscle soreness and relieves muscle pain getting you back in the game faster. The compression technology increase lymphatic and lactic drainage as well as increases blood flow.

For your appointment we ask that you please bring socks and pants or leggings that cover your skin.

What is in your Recovery Space?

Our recovery space holds relaxation recliners, massage guns, normatec compression pants, iPads filled with our favourite podcasts, articles and videos, and the best Tea in town on tap!

Why use Sauna and Ice Bath?

Physical Benefits:
When a person sits in a sauna, their heart rate increases and blood vessels widen. Conversely, when someone sits in an Ice Bath, their blood vessels contract. This expansion and contraction of the blood vessels increases circulation, flushes toxins and improves cardio vascular health.

Mental Benefits:
Sauna use has shown to ease pain and significantly reduce stress levels. There is no better place to train resilience and activation of the parasympathetic nervous system than through controlled breathing in the Ice Bath - we’d love to show you how!

Who shouldn’t use the Sauna or Ice Bath?

Anyone who has a cardiovascular problem or who is pregnant should seek medical advice before using a sauna.

What type of Sauna do you use?

We wanted to provide you with the best sauna experience we could so we decided to go with an Infrared Sauna from Clearlight Saunas. Clearlight have been in the infrared sauna business for 19 years and every sauna comes with the latest science available to ensure you receive the best in infrared technology. For us, we didn’t want to compromise on health or comfort so Clearlight was the easy choice!

Do I need to bring anything?

Just yourself and a mindset to get better! Whether it’s relaxation, mental resilience training or physical recovery - we’ve got you covered!

Is it a private room or a common area?

Our ‘Hot / Ice’ Room at O-Studio is completely private. You will be taken down to the room a few minutes before your session time begins and we will explain to you how you can get the best of of your experience! We have protocols on Hot Only, Cold Only or Contrast training.

What is different about your meditation classes?

Meditation at O-Studio is all about giving ourselves the time and space to define and practise the way we want to approach our lives. Whatever it means to you to be your best, meditation with a community that strives to be theirs is the best way to improve in a way that sticks.

How often do I need to meditate?

Just 20 minutes of meditation can turn a bad day into a good one. Make it a practice and you can change your whole mindset. Generally after practising consistently for over two weeks you should see a noticeable and lasting difference in your level of awareness and clarity in everyday life.

What does meditation help with?

Meditation is a broad term for a range of mental practices. At O-Studio, the central meditation we practise is mindfulness which teaches us to become aware of how we think and take back control. We supplement our mindfulness meditations with a range of mental exercises, built from psychological research to help you practice the kind of mental skills you want to use every day. From focus, optimism and resilience to kindness, confidence and creativity, these practices can help you to push what being at your best looks like.

Recommendations for a busy mind

Meditation is about learning to calm the mind, so busy minds are perfect for meditation! Because our sessions are lightly guided in a group setting, you are supported by the teacher and the others in the room to stay on track. We always share experiences after the session, which lets us know we're not alone in feeling like we can't switch off!

Do I need to bring anything?

A mind is all you need to meditate at O-Studio. We set up the room to allow you to sit in a comfortable position and in terms of dress there's no need to wear anything special, so from office attire to tradie gear wear whatever!

Are your Meditation classes guided?

The magic of meditation is in learning to take control of your own mind, so our O-Meditation classes are only lightly guided by the meditation teacher. With each practice, we point you in the right direction and cue you back into the practice to keep you on track.

Is there a right way to do it?

There's no right way to Float. We suggest using this time to calm your thoughts by focusing on your breath. It’s okay if you fall asleep! Others like to take this time to deeply focus on an issue or idea that’s been consuming their mind. Use the session how you'd like.

What if I fall asleep in the float tank?

The water in the float pod is incredibly buoyant (there’s approximately 450-500 kgs of Epsom Salt in each pod) and very relaxing so it’s entirely possible that you could fall asleep. Indeed, some people love to sleep while floating and you should feel free to do the same! It’s extremely unlikely that you’ll roll in your sleep as this is difficult to do while awake.

Is this like altered states?

Yes, but you’re not fully submerged in water, you don’t eat ritualistic mushrooms, and only a small percentage of floaters turn into proto-human monkeys. Jokes aside, we do hope however that you experience something worth taking away with you to make your life better - we sure do!

Can I float for longer than 45 minutes?

Of course! There are several ways to go about this, talk to a staff member who will happily help you out. Floats can be booked for longer sessions at an affordable price.

Can I keep my stuff secure while I float?

Each flotation therapy room is completely private so you’re ok to leave your stuff on the bench chair beside the pod while you float.

Will I become a dehydrated prune?

Nope - your skin doesn’t even prune up at all! The magnesium sulfate actually makes your skin very silky and soft. You will absorb some of the salt, so it’s advised that you drink plenty of water after your float.

How long have float cabins been around?

The first float pod was developed in 1954. These involved full submersion in water and a breathing device that completely covered your face. The first lay down, commercial cabins were invented in the early 70′s.

Who invented these crazy devices?

Dr. John C. Lily, an American physician, neuroscientist, psychoanalyst, philosopher, writer and inventor.

What’s the longest someone has floated?

There is a floatation therapy centre in Portland Oregon USA called Float On that had an endurance athlete rent a room for a 24 hour period and apparently floated for most of that time! As far as we are aware that is the longest but you’re welcome to try and beat it…!

Do I have to stay in the whole time?

There aren’t any latches on the float pod doors so you can get out anytime. That being said, the 45-minutes usually goes by waaaay faster than you’d expect!

Can more than one person float in a pod?

Only one person per float pod but we have four float Cabins available. we have two cabins available for floats every hour. Coming for your first float with a friend is a great way to start as we’re guessing you’ll want to talk about it for a while after! Double-wide cabins do exist, but we feel that they take away from the whole ‘sensory deprivation’ experience.

What kind of float cabins do you use?

We custom built our Float Cabins from scratch to create the ultimate float experience. With a design that rivals our partners at O-Studio, we’ve aimed to provide yet another luxurious and spacious flotation therapy experience. Fully equipped with coloured lighting, underwater speakers, an incredibly effective cleaning system and a replica of the Christchurch night sky on the ceiling, you can’t go wrong!

Do I need to bring anything?

If you have longer hair, you may want to bring a comb. Also, something to put your contact lenses into while you’re in the float pod. Other than that, we provide everything you need (towels, earplugs, body wash/shampoo, tea, water, etc) so just show up ready to relax!

Can I float if I have difficulty with mobility?

We have a number of people float with us that have mobility issues however if you struggle to get in and out of a bath then you will need to bring a support person with you. The support person is able to wait with you in the room or in reception and assist you when you need it.

Can I float if its ‘that-time-of-the-month’?

No sorry! We recommend booking in at day 1 to give yourself something to look forward to at the end of the week!

Can I float if I’m pregnant?

Pregnant women love to float but at O-Studio we would prefer you to get the approval of your midwife or doctor first because there may be circumstances around your pregnancy that we or you might never consider. We don't allow women to float in the first trimester or past 37 weeks. The number one thing pregnant women express after flotation therapy is that they experienced a ‘womb within womb’ feeling while in the float pod. Apparently this is quite a special experience as they feel they have a stronger connection with their baby when exposed to this environment - a mirror-like effect. Although floating on your back is perfectly comfortable and popular, pillows are also available which allow for a few different positions to add to the level of comfort. Flotation therapy eliminates the negative effects of gravity which can cause pain, inflammation and stress on the organs, joints, muscles, as well as the unborn baby.

Is flotation a legitimate therapy?

The short answer is ‘yes’ but don’t take our word for it - check it out for yourself! Flotation therapy has been around for over 40 years and has tonnes of published scientific research to back it up. It is being recommended as a tool by various members of the health profession including some doctors, psychologists, counsellors, physiotherapists, trainers, teachers and many more. As well as the science behind it, its meteoric rise in popularity in recent times is a testament to its positive results!

What is the difference between Float Cabins?

There is actually no physical difference between each of the Cabins. They each have the same music options, lighting, temperature and all other features are the exact same. The only difference is the room atmosphere and artwork. The funny thing is that most people find a favourite Cabin once they’ve been in a few times…. we wonder what yours will be!

How do you clean the float cabins?

We take our float pod hygiene extremely seriously. The water is fully filtered 3 and a half times between each float, passing through an intense 1 micron filter filtration system for particulate matter. The float pod then administers a set dose of H2O2 before the purified water then passes through a UV filter which targets the DNA and RNA of bacteria, viruses, algae and other biological matter. Furthermore, the Epsom salt solution is naturally sanitary; the combination of the high concentrations of and a small amount of disinfectant make it cleaner than a pool and nearly impossible for microorganisms to survive.

What if I'm Claustrophobic?

Our Float Cabin’s have specifically been designed for people who struggle with small spaces. You can literally stand up and walk around inside them! Further to this, Floating is more like floating in outer space than being enclosed in anything. Our Cabins are some of the biggest available at 2.6m long, 1.7m wide and 2.2m high so the feeling of being enclosed is very rare! You’re always in control of your environment, and even people with extreme claustrophobia have reported having no problems during their time in the pod. You can always leave the door open for as long as you like – again, you’re in control.

Are there age restrictions on floating?

Children 15yrs and under require a signed consent from a parent or guardian.

There are a couple of options for 'minor float sessions'... Generally children 6yrs to 11yrs float in their swimsuits with their parent or guardian sitting in the room. Children 12yrs and up can float with their parent or guardian in the reception area, ready to assist if needed. Have a chat with our staff prior to booking, younger children may prefer 30mins in the pod instead of the usual 45mins.

Do you have showers, hairdryers, GHD’s etc?

Yes, Yes, and Yes! You wait until you see the bathrooms!

Do you have lockers?

Yes we have lockers!

Do I need to bring my own mat?

If you have one, yes bring it along! If not, no worries, we have enough for everyone.

Can I do Yoga if I’m pregnant?

Yes, yoga is incredible for preparing you both physically and mentally for pregnancy and childbirth but we do suggest that you get in contact with us first. This is to ensure there are no circumstances specific to you that we need to be aware of.

Best first time yoga class?

We recommend beginning with either an Align or Mellow class at O-Studio. Our instructors are experts in positioning the class to meet you at your level so you will never feel uncomfortable or ‘out of your depth’. We would love to show you what yoga can do for you and your loved ones!

What's the difference between your classes?

Mellow is our slow restorative and yin style practice. The focus is flexibility, calming the parasympathetic nervous system and staying in the present. Align is a slower paced and balanced movement class focusing on mobility and connection. Align is great for beginners. Dynamic class will challenge you with more fluid movements, arm balancing and core sequences to build up a sweat, you will leave on a high!

Can anyone practice yoga?

Yes, absolutely! Female / Male, Young / Old, Active / Inactive, yoga really is for anyone and everyone. At O-Studio we request a minimum age of 12 and a maximum age of 114 :)

Do I need to bring anything?

We encourage you to practice in whatever you’d walk or run around the park in… something that is comfortable but allows your body to move freely and possibly sweat in! You’re welcome to bring your own mat but other than that, you really don’t need anything.

Is Yoga just about becoming more flexible?

Absolutely this is the focus for some! BUT for others it’s about building strength, increasing endurance, finding calm, or improving coordination. There’s a reason yoga has been around for thousands of years… the benefits are incredible both physically and mentally. A strong Yoga practice will have you looking and feeling great but it will also balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, improve self regulation through breathing techniques, increase mindfulness, and teach you how to be ‘responsive’ rather than ‘reactive’ to challenging situations.
